NUGGETS🐣
Creative sustainability is not just a matter of recycling materials, it also involves innovative entrepreneurial practices that allow us to reuse ideas when applicable to new projects. As a contract graphic designer, I was running into an issue of “dead designs.” I would work on a concept for a client, sell the artwork, and then after the event I wouldn’t be able to repurpose the designs because I sold ownership to the client. I had a graveyard of one-off designs on my hard drive for various projects, and I couldn’t legally revive any of them. Lately I’ve been experimenting with different client contracts that allow me to retain ownership of my work through licensing. I’ll grant a client a limited time license, and after it expires, I regain ownership allowing me to recycle expired work into new projects. This issue of MOE features various repurposed designs that have become assets for creative collage in my personal projects.
